Honestly, not a bad value for what all I’m getting, but still, 400$+ all at once is a bit of a blow. I’ll get some back when I return the calipers. I was ecstatic to see the master cylinder be under 20$. The slave cylinder was just 26$ at a brick and mortar store. Overall, this represents the majority of actual parts needed to get the fiero back on the road. The O2 sensor was brand new, spark plugs were clean, air filter was new, fuel filter was recent enough, gas tank was drained and looks good, brake master cylinder and booster are newer, and the hoses and lines look in good shape.

I think this should be all I need to let the Fiero hit the open road again soon.

Oddly, your parts costs are about the same as my Land Rover, except that my front rotors are made of unobtanium and therefore cost $100 each, min (idk why, they’re not that much bigger than the back rotors that  were like $25)

I’m making the appointment for the pre-season maintenance on my 997.2 tomorrow.

Just as soon as I stop my wallet from slashing it’s wrists while kicking the chair out from underneath it after ensuring the barrel of the gun is lodged in it’s teeth.

See, my long term plans for the Fiero are to sell it in a few years for hopefully more than I paid for it (and judging by prices, that should be easy....) and put it towards a 996/997 911.

So you’re telling me I shouldn’t get used to 400$ for a master cylinder and complete replacement of all brake hardware?

I spend about $1,000 every year or two for Volvo 1800 parts. They mostly sit in boxes but this year I plan to have it running. I probably have $1,200 in parts for a modern fuel injection conversion but decided late last year that I am going to keep it original so I can sell it later on. Sometimes I buy parts like the high quality repop dash cap because I am afraid they will stop making them before I get around t o fixing something. Cheaper than if I started to go golfing.

My front rotors cost more than you paid for your car.

If I was stupid enough to have said “sure, why not PCCB” my rotors would cost more than your NICE car.

No. I don’t mean the RX8. That wouldn’t even pay for the PCCB pads.

I don’t have an RX-8, my “nice” car is my daily - a 2017 FoST. But IIRC, rotors all around cost similar prices to a used FoST so I’ll belie ve it.

In the 80s, everyone took a crap on the Fiero for being GM parts bin. Today, everyone wishes they could jus t buy “Chevette parts” to fix their mid engined sports car.

FoST? Afraid not.

At Suncoast (the cheapest by far,) 997.2 PCCB front rotors are $12 ,500, rears are $11,5 00, front pads $470 , rear pads $440 , pad sensors $70 per wheel, mandatory hardware kit $170 per wheel, brake cylinder paste $32, mandatory fluid flush $220.

With 4 hours labor and sales tax, brings your total to $28,967.76 not including environmental fee. At the indy shop. But your indy shop can’t do centerlocks because 444ft/lbs of torque. So you’re off to the dealer.

$7,800 EACH for front rotors, $6,600 EACH for rear rotors, $665 front pads, $605 rear pads, $235 per wheel hardware kit. That’s $31,010 and we haven’t even bought all the hardware or paid sales tax yet. Spoiler Alert: you can do your brakes, or you can buy a new FoRS at MSRP.

Moral of the story? Ceramic brakes are for rich idiots.

Well good thing all i want right now is to get a mid engined chevette powered by a postal truck motor up to a driveable state.

So I shouldn’t mention that there’s a bunch of loons that made an easy install swap kit for the 3800 Series II supercharged (which you can locate a dozen of in any given junkyard)?

3800 swaps, and 3400 swaps, and LS swaps, and basically engine swaps in general are overplayed for the Fiero. I want to build up an SD4 circle track engine for street use. Because nothing is a better slap to a pretentious face quite like delivering the slap with a Fiero still ostensibly powered by an I ro n Duke.

There is a list out there somewhere. That list is titled “Peo ple Not Allowed To Play With SD4 Engines.”

But the joke’s on them. They only know nine of my aliases!

You have a machine shop that can turn blocks from billet, right?

I actually do. Though I don’t think my friends have attempted such an ambitious project, I have seen multiple build threads in the S10 group of people making 140-150hp engines from postal truck blocks. That’s really all it needs. Though the full bore, lopey race cam is tempting......But it gets crazy trying to keep things under control. Advantage of the 150hp postal engine is the car can already keep a 150hp engine cool just fine. And the use of the iron duke keeps everything accessible and cheap.

Poorly rebuilt calipers were my only option for my w123 and they were $120 each. Rotors were $75 each, pads were $90 for 4, master cylinder $40

I had a plan for one of those once. I think it basically read ‘can’t have displacement? 2.5 liter BIKE ENGINE’ or something similarly insane.

I mean come on. It’s an Iron Puke. What’s it gonna do, go fast?! HA!

I have zero problem with my Fiero taking double digits to reach 60. Everyone wants them to be a budget ferrari and then they get upset when it isn’t that. I’m more than happy to embrace the commuter car side and just enjoy the fact that when I roll up next to a sentra at the light, I’m in a bright red, mid engined car and they’re in automotive hell. Maybe they don’t see it that way, but that’s the way I choose to see it.

You had identical sized brakes front and rear? Or are you saying you got two apir and not 4 pair of pads?

Brakes actually work OK, (except pull to the left a bit and no hand brake, MC leaks a little ) but I’ll have more confidence driving around knowing all the brakes are in good shape.

I think I’m going to let my guy do the rears though as those are extremely difficult unless you have a lift and can drop the whole subframe.
